Issue 58 - What a Nuisance!

Like it or loathe it, the term ‘nuisance fish’ is here to stay. The practice of labelling species other than one’s intended quarry ‘a nuisance’ has been widespread for years within specimen coarse fishing, and is part and parcel of the angling scene. Each specialism has its favourite nuisances. For the hardened carp angler, it is the tench and the bream which most readily fall into this dubious category. For the barbel or roach man, the chub is the villain of the piece. For the out-and-out perch hunter, tackle-smashing pike are not welcome, while for coarse angling all-rounders, normally content to catch anything that swims, the eel proves the exception to their catholic tastes, and will provoke something near to rage in even the most mild-mannered of float-minders.
