Issue 55 - A Fishing Place

Tapping the word ‘fishing’ into eBay calls up a jumble of flotsam, no less so if you restrict the search to ‘Art’. E-commerce is democratic, so Art is whatever the sellers want it to be - Thomas Kinkade prints, old Punch cartoons, a ‘sexy Marilyn Monroe fishing photo’, Norman Wilkinson etchings, pages ripped from old books, insipid Victorian chromos, oils by once-respected RAs. A recent painting - not by an RA, but not bad - popped up as ‘fishing’ because it included two dim figures and one rod, immediately interesting not because it said much about fishing but because it evoked so much of a fishing place.
